Welcome to the Iowa Public Health Information (IPHI) web site. When we began planning this project in 2003, we saw the potential for a relatively straightforward, but high-impact product, one that would greatly benefit the public health professionals in Iowa. During the ensuing months we conducted outreach sessions to determine the areas of greatest "information need" and to outline key functions for an easy-to-use web site like this one.
The project is co-sponsored by the Iowa Center for Public Health Preparedness, the Upper Midwest Public Health Training Center, and the Iowa Department of Public Health. Its seed funding comes from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region (NN/LM GMR) and the Centers for Disease Control Information Center. Ongoing support of the web site will be provided by Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, The University of Iowa.
In 2003 the NN/LM GMR teamed up with the Information Center of the CDC to generate an RFP entitled "Public Health Information Models." The goal of the RFP was to attract projects that could serve as models for information delivery for public health and might be replicated in other states.
Our Project Goals were straightforward:
- Address the information needs of Iowa public health professionals by creating an easy-to-use web site that emphasizes local and state resources and provides links to National Library of Medicine (NLM) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) resources.
- Provide training and support to public health professionals in using IPHI, NLM and CDC resources.
As we improve this web site, we will be refining the quality of the site's search results, we will be continuing to add more links to valuable content, and we hope to learn from you how we might better serve your information needs.
